Quick answer
Purchased coverage is the number of packages times the coverage stated on the package. Required coverage is the measured area times one plus your waste allowance. If purchased is greater than or equal to required, you bought enough.
What is left over is a different sum: purchased coverage, minus the area you actually installed, minus the offcuts that were too small to use. Only the last term is a guess, and it is the one that decides whether you have a spare box or a bag of scrap.
The order of operations matters when you are checking mid-job. Compare boxes opened against area laid, not boxes remaining against area remaining — the first tells you your real waste rate early enough to buy more from the same batch.
Did you buy enough? Run the check before you open the last box
The check needs three numbers: the area you measured, the coverage printed on the package, and the count of packages. The waste allowance is the fourth, and it is the one people leave out when they are checking rather than ordering.
Worked example on paint. A room has 420 sq ft of wall to cover in two coats. Paint coverage is about 350 sq ft per gallon per coat, so two coats need 840 coverage-square-feet. Divide by 350 and you need 2.4 gallons — which means two gallons is not enough, and three is. It is a common way to come up short, because 420 sq ft against a 350 sq ft gallon reads like one and a bit until the second coat is counted.
Worked example on drywall. 640 sq ft of wall with the usual 10 percent allowance is 704 sq ft. At 32 sq ft per 4 by 8 sheet that is exactly 22 sheets. In 4 by 12 sheets, at 48 sq ft each, it is 14.67 — so 15 sheets, and the larger board leaves you 16 sq ft of surplus rather than none. Bigger sheets mean fewer joints but coarser rounding.
The failure mode worth naming: a package's stated coverage is nominal. A carton marked 20 sq ft holds planks that total 20 sq ft, not 20 sq ft of finished floor — the difference is whatever you cut off. That is precisely what the waste allowance is for, so a check that compares packages against bare area, with no allowance, will tell you that you have enough right up until you do not.

What is left over is less than the subtraction suggests
This is where the two questions come apart. The paper surplus is purchased coverage minus floor area. The usable surplus is that figure minus everything you cut off and could not re-use, and on a plank or tile floor most of the difference has already gone into the skip.
Worked example on laminate. A 15 by 20 ft room is 300 sq ft. With a 10 percent allowance you need 330 sq ft, and at 20 sq ft per carton that is 16.5 — so 17 cartons, 340 sq ft purchased. Subtract the 300 sq ft floor and the surplus looks like 40 sq ft, which sounds like two spare cartons.
It is not. If the actual cutting waste came in at 8 percent, 24 sq ft of that 40 went into offcuts, leaving 16 sq ft — under a single carton, and only if the offcuts were long enough to be worth keeping. The honest way to state it is that you bought 17 cartons, opened 17, and finished with most of one.
Offcuts are not automatically waste, though. On a floor laid in rows, the piece cut off the end of one row usually starts the next, provided it clears the manufacturer's minimum starter length. That is what separates a well-planned floor at 6 percent real waste from a poorly planned one at 15, on the same room and the same material.
Checking part-way through, while it is still fixable
The useful moment to check is not at the end. It is at roughly the quarter mark, when you have laid enough to know your real waste rate and there is still time to order more from the same production run.
The measurement is simple: work out the area you have covered so far and count the packages you have opened to do it. Cartons opened times coverage, divided by area laid, gives your actual consumption rate. If a 300 sq ft floor took 5 cartons — 100 sq ft of material — to cover 88 sq ft, you are running at 13.6 percent waste rather than the 10 you ordered for, and the 17 cartons will not finish the room.
Catching that at a quarter of the way through means a top-up order can still match. Catching it at the end means the extra cartons come from a different batch, and on anything with a colour — tile, laminate, carpet, shingles, even paint — a different batch is visible. That is what a dye lot or batch number is for, and it is the single strongest argument for checking early.
Paint has its own version: if you are on the second gallon of a three-gallon estimate and half the first coat remains, box the remaining cans together into one container and stir before continuing. That is how professional painters avoid a visible seam between two cans of nominally identical colour.
What to keep, and what to do with the rest
Keep one unopened package where you can. A single spare carton of flooring or box of tile is the difference between a repairable scratch and a re-floored room, because the same product in the same shade may not be available in two years — and if it is, it will not be the same batch.
Store it where the conditions match the room it belongs to. A spare carton of hardwood in an unheated garage takes on moisture and will not sit flat against boards that have spent two years at indoor humidity. Inside the house, flat, is the whole requirement.
Label it with the room, the date, the product name and the batch or dye lot number. That last one is the piece people never write down and always need, because it is printed on the carton that gets thrown away.
For what genuinely cannot be kept: unopened, undamaged material is often returnable within a set window, and that window is usually shorter than a renovation. Check the return period at the point of ordering rather than at the end of the job — it is a common reason for buying in two deliveries rather than one, and it is the only part of this arithmetic that has a deadline attached.
Count what is left in pieces, not in square feet
For flooring sold by the carton, square feet is the natural unit and the arithmetic above works. For tile it quietly misleads, because a tile does not cover its own area — the joint around it covers the rest, and that difference decides whether the pieces in your garage are enough to patch a floor.
A pressed 12 in tile measures about 11⅞ across, not 12. Twelve of them have a face area of 11.875² × 12 = 1,692.19 sq in, which is 11.75 sq ft — yet the carton is labelled 12 sq ft, and once laid on a 12 in module with the joint absorbed they really do cover 12 sq ft of floor. The label is describing coverage, not tile.
So seven loose tiles are 6.85 sq ft of ceramic and will cover 7.00 sq ft of floor. If you record the leftovers as "about 6.8 sq ft" you will later conclude you cannot patch a 7 sq ft area, and you can. Write down the piece count.
The piece count is also the only figure that survives a missing label. If the carton is long gone, measure one tile, square it, and multiply by how many you have — but then work out the module the floor was actually laid on, because that is what the pieces will cover. A 12 in module and a 12⅛ in module hold the same tile and cover different floors.
Keep the reserve as its own line rather than folding it into the leftovers. Material set aside for a future repair is not surplus — it is committed inventory, and counting it as spare is how a reserve quietly gets used up finishing a cupboard nobody planned for.
