The steps, in order
The short version — each step is explained in full below.
- Finish the calculation and read it back
Enter every area, set the waste factor, and check the result against a rough mental estimate before you keep it. A number worth recording is one you have already sanity-checked.
- Print the sheet
Use the Print button in the calculator header. It prints the calculator only — not the article around it — and produces a one-page sheet carrying the site, what was measured, the date, every dimension you entered, the scale drawing and the result.
- Save it as a PDF rather than paper
In the print dialog choose Save as PDF as the destination. That gives you a file you can attach to a quote request or keep with the product paperwork, which is what makes it a record rather than a printout.
- Add what the sheet cannot know
Photograph corners, transitions, stairs, closets, openings and any visible subfloor, and note who measured and why. The sheet has the geometry; the photographs have the conditions that change a quote.
- Share the dimensions as a link
Any calculator page accepts length and width in the URL, so /calculators/room/#l=12&w=10 opens already filled in. Send that and the other person sees your numbers rather than retyping them.

There is no account, no saved projects and no history here. That is deliberate — the site stores nothing about you — but it does mean a result you do not print or bookmark is gone when you close the tab.
What makes a result reproducible
The test is simple: could someone else start from what you kept and land on the same number? An answer on its own fails that test, because it hides every decision that produced it — which shape, which dimensions, whether the closet was included, what waste percentage was applied.
The printed sheet passes it, because it keeps the inputs beside the output. Each area shows its own dimensions and its own scale drawing, so a reader can see at a glance that 12 ft 6 in by 10 ft is a rectangle roughly square in proportion, and that the subtotal beneath it is 125.00 sq ft. Two areas print as two blocks, each with its own subtotal, and the panel at the end shows the combined figure with the conversions and the waste-adjusted area.
The date matters more than it looks. Measurements get superseded — a wall moves, a bed edge is re-cut, a closet is opened up — and an undated number is impossible to place against a job that ran for months.

Sharing a calculation rather than a number
Every calculator page reads a length and a width from the URL. Append ?l= and &w= in feet and the page opens with those values in the fields and the result already computed — /calculators/tile/#l=12&w=10 lands on 120 sq ft with the tile waste factor already set.
That is more useful than sending the answer, because the recipient can change it. A contractor who thinks the room is 12 ft 4 in rather than 12 ft can adjust one field and see the difference immediately, on the same calculator with the same assumptions.
It works on all 46 calculator pages, so you can point someone at the calculator that matches the trade — the paint page for a decorator, the tile page for a tiler — with the dimensions already carried across. The values are clamped to sensible numbers, so a mangled link falls back to an empty field rather than showing something absurd.
It carries length and width only. A circle, a trapezoid or a multi-area calculation cannot travel in a link, and for those the printed sheet is the way to send the working.
The room-size chart is built on this. Every row in its dimension table is a link that opens the calculator with those numbers already entered, which is the same mechanism you can use by hand.
Checking a number somebody else sent you
The same habit works in reverse, and this is where it earns its keep. When a quote arrives with an area on it, ask for the dimensions rather than accepting the total — then the arithmetic is yours to check in ten seconds.
Two questions settle most disagreements. First: does the area match the dimensions? Multiply them and see. A room described as 12 ft 6 in by 10 ft should come to 125 sq ft, and if the quote says 131 it is either measuring something else or has already added something.
Second: is this the measured area or the purchase area? Divide one by the other and the waste factor falls out. A quote of 144.38 sq ft against a measured 131.25 is 144.38 ÷ 131.25 = 1.10, so it already carries a 10% allowance — and if you then add your own 10% on top, you are ordering twice for the same cuts.
That second one is the expensive misunderstanding, and it runs both ways. A supplier quoting the measured area expects you to add waste; one quoting the purchase area does not. Neither is wrong, and neither is obvious from the number alone, which is the whole reason to keep the inputs beside the answer.
If a quoted area divides by your measured area to something close to 1.05, 1.10 or 1.15, it already has a waste factor in it. Ask before adding your own.
What the site deliberately does not do
There is no sign-in, no saved projects, no history and no server-side record of anything you type. Every calculation happens in your browser and nothing about it is sent anywhere.
That is a trade. It means no cross-device sync and no list of past jobs to return to, and it means a refresh clears the form. It also means there is no account to lose, nothing to be breached, and no reason for the site to ask who you are.
So the practical habit is: if a calculation matters, print it before you close the tab. If it only matters for the next five minutes, do not bother.
Keeping the record with the job
The sheet is most useful in the two situations people do not plan for. The first is a disagreement about quantity — a quote that assumed a different area, or a delivery that came up short — where a dated sheet showing the dimensions and the waste factor settles it in one look.
The second is a repair years later. Matching a discontinued floor means knowing the product, the batch and how much was originally bought, and that information lives on the carton and the order rather than in your memory. File the printed sheet with the receipt and a photograph of the product label, and the future repair is a phone call rather than an investigation.
