Where to start
The guides fall into three groups. If you are measuring something for the first time, start with how to calculate square footage — it covers the formula for every common shape, the inches-first method that prevents rounding drift, and a whole house worked from end to end. If the room is not a rectangle, measuring irregular rooms covers splitting, triangulation and curved walls.
The second group is about turning a measurement into an order. Material waste factors explains why the same floor needs 5% extra in one layout and 20% in another, and paint coverage does the same for gallons. Both exist because the measured area of a room and the quantity you buy are different numbers, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake in this subject.
